The annual Scrub Run is HealthTrust’s largest fundraising event.  The run includes a 5K Run and Walk and a 1 mile Fun Run for children ages 13 and under.  The challenging course, established by Dr. Angel Neely Overstreet, takes you through the quiet countryside and rolling hills.

The day begins with 8:00 a.m. registration at Magee, Mississippi’s beautiful Sportsplex and the run begins at 9:00 a.m.  The children’s Fun Run begins at 10:00 a.m. with $5.00 chicken lunch plates available at 11:00 a.m.  There is live music, door prizes, games for the children and much more.  This is a fun filled community event that you do not want to miss!

Dustin McCallumDustin McCallum, age 18, of Brandon and nephew of Stephanie Sullivan, MGH’s infection control coordinator, ran in the 2007 HealthTrust Scrub Run.  He was diagnosed with cerebral palsy as a young child.  His time was just over 22 minutes and he actually beat one of our clinic physicians!  He said he would have made better time if the course had not been so hilly.  Dustin runs to build leg strength and coordination.  At one time he couldn’t walk without falling.

Dustin started running to get his physical fitness badge which was a requirement for Eagle Scout.  He then decided to run track his junior year and he ran Cross Country his senior year at NWR High School.   As a senior at NWR High School, his senior project was Adolescent Obesity.  His product for that project was a 5K run.

A special update from Dustin’s aunt:  My nephew, Dustin, who ran in the HealthTrust Scrub Run, has completed his first marathon (26.2 miles).  He completed it in 5hrs and 55mins.  He hurt his knee around mile 14 and had to walk the remainder, which was 12.2 miles.  I am so proud of him!! I just like to brag on him.  He is a very special young man.  He has ran many 5k races and also a 15k race.  He did place 3rd in his age group in the Blues Marathon.

Dustin is a freshman at Mississippi State University.  He is currently training to run the Blue Cross Blue Shield Half Marathon in January 2009.
